As I wrote in my last post, the church was going to release a batch of songs from the forthcoming hymnbook on Thursday (though it actually released them on Wednesday).
My ward didn’t sing any of the new hymns, which makes sense. A Wednesday release doesn’t really give the chorister or the organist time to go through them, and there is a pretty decent chance that today’s hymns were picked a week or more ago.
But then, the singles ward that meets after us started their sacrament meeting with “Come Thou Fount” from the new hymnbook; I don’t know, honestly, whether they printed and distributed the hymn or counted on members to be able to read the music on their phones. (The singles are all young, undoubtedly with decent near vision; even still, I’d hate to try to read sheet music on my phone (though I’ve done it in jam sessions as a last resort!). But they sounded great, whether or not they had printed or virtual music.) On top of that, I saw a number of friends on Facebook mention that they’d sung one of the new hymns today.
Which got me wondering: how many wards sang at least one song from the new collection today? And how many sang songs that weren’t “Come Thou Fount”? To get some sense, here’s an entirely unscientific poll. I’m leaving out the Christmas and Easter hymns because, well, I’m going to assume none of us sang those today.
(Also, I’ve never used a WordPress poll before; if you sang more than one and the poll only allows one vote, pick one. You can tell us in the comments what else you sang. On top of that, I’d love to find out where you are and get your impressions of how the new song(s) went, so please feel free to comment even if your ward only sang one new hymn!)
